Proper Maintanence For Palm Trees

Palm Trees be maintained is not only just to make sure they look nice and tailored. When palm trees are not maintained they can also promote rodent. There are a few ways that palm trees can attract rodents to your South Florida home. When palm trees are located close to the home they can actually provide roof access for rodent. We always recommend trimming palm trees and even ornamentals at least 3-6 feet away from the roof. If there are any opening on your roof it can provide straight access into your attic. We have had many calls about these issues with rodents, birds, lizards, iguanas, and snakes.

Another way that palm trees promote rodent activity is by producing berries. Palm trees can grow different color berries (mainly orange or yellow) and rodents are attracted to these berries for food. We always recommend trimming down those berries in order to reduce rodent activity on the property. When these types of factors are present on a South Florida home with palm trees its very easy for rodents to make an entrance into your home.

Palm Tree Deficiencies

Yellowing (Nitrogen, Manganese, or Magnesium Deficiency)

This image is an example of a yellowing palm tree that is lacking its basic nutrients. When next to healthy palm trees it makes the yellowing palm tree really stand out. Notice how there is one dark green palm tree and one yellow.

Frizzle Top

This deficiency may look like “yellowing” but these palm fronds also turn brown and shrivel up. This can be easily identified by densely brow shriveled up palm fronds. This is caused by a manganese deficiency and most common in Queen or Royal palms.

Ganoderma

This is a fungus that attacks the base of the palm tree. Once the tree has been infected by this fungus it will start dying off until it is completely dead. This is one of the most viscious fungi to infest palm trees.
